Abstract | The year 2000 is the highest breakeven of M&A activities in Asia since 1995 by achieving 187 billion US $ in which more than 100 billion is value of high-tech deals mostly in telecommunication, elech·onic and semi-conductor industries. The high-tech M&As accelerated in 2000 which is the year where there was an Internet boom as well as market boom especially NASDAQ index. The research will reveal what factors driving high-tech M&A activities in Asia recent years. Understanding reality of how high-tech M&As affect combined firm's performance will help to draw some critical success factors and lessons learnt for managers. The research also focuses on examining post-acquisition performance of Pacific Century CyberWork (PCCW) who took over Cable & Wireless Hong Kong Telecommunication in 2000. The deal was the biggest one in 2000 presenting around $37.4 billion US $. Interestingly, PCCW who is an Internet company did acquire a target film having turnover 186 times higher than that of PCCW before the deal. Results of the case study are expected to give more evidences for findings in previous studies on high-tech mergers as well as for observations which are done in the research. |
