Abstract | Since 1986 Lao PDR has greatly reduced the barriers to international trade and the government's direct controls over the economy and the unilateral and regional (ASEAN) trade and investment liberalization pursed by Laos PDR during the past few years have began transforming the economy. A further trade openness is to join the WTO, which will give traders and investors higher confidence in the Lao reform programme. Aggregate growth during this reform period has been quite rapid. However, these beneficial effects are not fully promising. Given the very limited exports products, heavily dependent on import duties on its revenue and increasing current account deficit may derail the reform. The further step for Lao is to reform its economic sectors and improve institutional ability to deal with rising competition from other countries. |
