Abstract | Financial integration in the European Union appears to be successful after the introduction of the euro in January 1999. The euro since then became one of the important international currency that is used in twelve countries in the European continent. As the integration and development of financial markets are likely to contribute to economic growth of the union by removing national baITiers to exchange, and by allocating capital more efficiently, the birth of the euro has been viewed as the crucial factor contributing to economic integration in the euro area. With an aim to provide readers with clear view on how the advent of the euro changed the scenario of euro area financial markets, this research first will provide a historical description of the EU, the EMU and the euro. An overview of the euro area financial markets will be conducted and following that the author will draw out some significant changes in these markets due to the existence of the euro. The last part of this research will then give a link to a potential monetary union in Asia, which is currently under debate. |
