AbstractThis research explores the learning situation of site engineers in construction organizations in Thailand with the aim of understanding how site engineers develop competency in the workplace, and to make suggestions for improving learning. A qualitative approach was used in this research. After reviewing all relevant theories, a questionnaire was generated to accomplish the objective stated. Pilot testing was done to improve the questionnaire before administering to respondents. Interviews were also conducted with people who could provide information, to incorporate missing information and to check validity and reliability of the questionnaire based on 'subjective expert judgement' . The data collected were analyzed statistically and in accordance with qualitative data analysis techniques. The study shows that Thai site engineers develop competency while working on construction sites. Some reliable measurement and theories, such as Learning Styles Inventory, developed by Kolb (1984), or Learning from On-the-Job Experience Theory, proposed by Honey and Mumford ( 1979), were applied to investigate this phenomenon. The learning processes of site engineers to develop competency is clarified step-by-step, from objective definition stage to objective satisfaction stage. The factors influencing the efficiency of site engineers' learning were also identified to provide useful guidelines to improve the learning situation in Thailand construction organizations.
