AbstractToday, information technology is regarded as crucial for contributing to a country's economic and social development. Trend in globalization, rapid advancement in information technology, evolution of free trade regions and lowering of trade barriers are forcing businesses around the world to compete. Information system is one of the proven IT tools for businesses to benefits from and prospers. Nowadays, the use of information system is becoming essential for Myanmar businesses to compete in global information economy. But deployment and use of information system requires a significant amount of effort and investment. The outcomes should be reasonable and justifiable. The effectiveness should be preserved. This research tries to explore the situation of the effective use of information system in Myanmar, especially the roles of top management in bringing about the effectiveness. The country's economy, ICT developments, industry characteristics, competitive environments, infrastructure were also considered as supportive information. But the study focused on the effective use of IS especially the top management inputs such as knowledge/skill, participation in IS activities and their support, the IS characteristics and their relations/effects on the successful use of information system. The effective use is considered as the use of IS to its fullest extent for the benefits of businesses under given environments and infrastructure. It was found that the information system use in Myanmar businesses is still in its infancy. There are many rooms to improve such as the roles of IS use, the type of IS use and Top managements' support and participation. Government support and favorable policy is needed. The top managements of the businesses were found to play an important role in using information systems effectively. Recommendations were made for government, businesses, top management and information system developers.
