Abstract | The prices of energy have seen a sharp increase in the post-oil shock period this has increased cost of most goods and services worldwide. India with a population of more than one Billion is faced with a precarious situation wherein the demand of energy far out-numbers its supply. Coupled to this is the fact that increas ing pollution levels from human activities has led to an increase in the depletion of the ozone layer resulting in increasing global temperatures, threatening the world with floods etc. In order to reduce the depletion of this ozone layer and reduce global pollution, countries have met in Kyoto in 1997 to discuss ways of mitigating the effects of industrialization to reduce the pollution levels through sustainable development. The Kyoto Protocol has brought forward a few mechanisms under which the developed countries have been mandated to reduce pollution levels. As the cost of implementing environmental protection measures in the developed world is very high, KP has suggested a unique mechanism known as the "Clean Development Mechanism", whereby Annex-I countries could fund similar projects in the developing countries and in-turn earn credits for the emissions reduced. This has presented countries like India a good opportunity to get eco-friendly technologies and foreign capital to improve their industrial energy efficiency levels. The COM market has also thrown open a window of opportunity for new businesses and this research attempts to understand the roles of the various players in this energy-environment- CDM market, their problems and success stories and tries to recommend possible solutions to help this market mature. |
