Abstract | In this research, we analyzed different technology strategies of local automotive firms and explored its impact on technological capability development and competitive advantage. Some previous researches indicated that the China local car makers can be divided into three groups according to their technology strategies, especially product technology strategies: the Adopter, the Developer, and the Adopter - Developer, which was confirmed by this research. This research identified the relationships between different types of technology strategies and firm competitiveness and technological capability development. The research result shows that in the short term, the Adopters and the Adopter-Developers are dominating the higher end of the market, but the Developers are becoming strong competitiveness at the lower end market and the Developers and the Adopter - Developers are bettered positioned to develop technological capabilities. Since most of market share is taken by local Sino-foreign auto joint-venture and each major firms has its own joint venture in China, and technology transfer are absolutely necessary component and process of Adopter and Adopter-Developer, technology transfer and joint venture are also considered. This study suggests that the Chinese auto industry firms should establish and strengthen its own R&D while establishing the joint-venture with foreign firms to absorb advanced technology. This study also describes how the automobile industry is evolving to respond to WTO challenges in terms of governmental policy and supports. Technological changes fueled by governmental policy would be China's drive toward sustainable auto development. |
