Abstract | Seafood processing industry is one of the most important export earners of Vietnam. Besides increasing the economic value, seafood-processing industry also causes some damages to environment by its resource consumption (energy, seafood raw material and water). To satisfy the environmental laws and the requirements of customers, and to deal with the increasing price of energy, the pressure of competition of foreign markets, the Vietnamese seafood industry has to reduce its energy and water consumption. This study was carried out in two province of Mekong Delta; the area contributes to more than 51 of total seafood export of Vietnam, to identify the cleaner production potentials. A preliminary survey was carried out in thirteen seafood-processing factories of different sizes and with different types of product in Kien Giang and An Giang province. Information regarding their production, energy and consumption and their environmental issues was obtained. The preliminary survey indicated some potential for energy and water savings. One factory was chosen for carrying out detailed audit. Detailed audit was carried out in the factory in Kien Giang province. The electricity and water reduction options were identified and studied in terns of technical, financial and environmental aspects. Most of options could be implemented with no or low investment but their benefits are very important. If implemented these options will help to reduce water consumption by 7,912 m'/ year, electricity consumption by 61,784 kWh/ years and CO_ generation by 44.7 tons /year kg CO2 / year with a total investment is 349,332,163 VND. To sustain the results of energy and water saving, the support of managers and the awareness of worker are very important |
