AbstractThis research identifies external risk factors associated with the attractiveness of Asian construction markets to experienced overseas Thai contractors. External risk factors are grouped into five main groups: (1) Political risk; (2) Economic & Financial risk; (3) Social risk; (4) Market risk; (5) Laws & Regulations. Based on the survey of experienced overseas Thai contractors, it was found that the most critical external risk factors exist mainly in the political arena and with regard to laws & regulation. When selecting a new market needed, a contractor usually responds to risk through use of a critical external risk model. This research also included a case study and useful information on Asian construction markets. According to analyzing the information of Asian markets regard with a critical external risk model, the results revealed that Hong Kong was ranked as the most attractive construction market in Asia due to having the lowest degree of critical external risks. Indonesia's market was ranked last among provided target countries mainly due to instability of its government and economic conditions.
