AbstractThe research deals with the resource-constrained project-scheduling problem (RCPSP) with flexible work profiles. An activity work profile is the resource requirement of the activity in each period in a planning horizon. To solve the problem, a heuristic based on GA is developed. A solution is encoded in two-dimensional chromosome. One is of an activity sequence and the other is of activity work profiles. In the first phase, the GA operators namely crossover and mutation are applied to the activity sequence for producing children. In the second phase, a different set of GA operators are applied to children's work profiles. Work profiles of all activities have to satisfy three constraints: (1) total value of each work profile has to be exactly equal to the resource requirement of the activity; (2) the resource requirement in each period have to be in a specified range; and (3) there is at least a number of consecutive periods having a constant resource usage. After the crossover, one additional operator in the second phase called the modification step is applied to guarantee the constraints of work profiles. The proposed GA is firstly tested to select the appropriate and efficient parameters and operators. Secondly, computational experiment on 48 instances is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm. Finally, results of experiment show that the flexibility of work profiles in RCPSP can help to utilize better the resource availability and shorten the project makespan.
