AbstractControl chart is a statistical tool that is used to control and improve almost any kind of process. However, when the control variable is linguistic data, traditional control charts are not applicable. The major contribution of fuzzy set theory is its capability of representing linguistic data. In the literature, there exist some fuzzy control charts developed for linguistic data that are mainly based on membership and probabilistic approaches. In this thesis, control chart for linguistic data is developed. In a different way, the construction of this control chart is based on arithmetic operations of fuzzy numbers. In addition, a new approach of out-of-control detection is developed so as to determine process mean shift by classifying the out-of-control set into decision level rules, so-called the degree of out-of-control. This thesis also presents a numerical example, interprets and compares to other approaches. Furthermore, general guidelines are given for the proper applications of the proposed fuzzy quality control chart.
