AbstractA MEMS based micro-actuator is designed for vertical levitation for active control of Roll and Pitch attitude of slider. This will help in better control and precise positioning of the head over the disk and lead to increase in recording density of the hard disk drive. By controlling the attitude of the slider we can also control the flying height of the slider. To incorporate the effect of air bearing forces on the slider and micro-actuator CFD simulation of a two rail taper slider is conducted for finally getting the net force acting on the slider in z-axis, these z-components of the forces were used to establish a theoretical relation for flying height and roll and pitch attitude of the slider. The behavior of partial levitation microactuator is predicted and explained with step simulation at different voltages.
