AbstractIntelligent vehicle is a term to define the vehicles that are equipped the Autonomous or Semi-Autonomous Driving System. Since it inherits much outstanding benefit features such as efficiently utilizing in hazardous areas and so on, many researches have been conducted to develop the most important thing that is road detection and tracking system. There are some approaches for road detection and tracking such as visional, micro sonic and so on. However, this thesis attempts to develop a vision-based road detection and tracking system. Marked road and unmarked road detection algorithms are both developed by processing the gray image and color image from a CCD camera to detect the road marking or skeleton line, respectively. The images are captured and processed dynamically by a program written in Visual C++ and running on a computer to obtain the lateral position and offset angle of the car centerline relative to the road marking or skeleton line. A prototype is made to experiment the algorithm, a microcontroller receives the correcting signal output from PC through serial communication to control a servomotor to driver the car always on road.
