AbstractThis thesis describes the development of low cost machine vision system using webcams and high-level language like Matlab for defect detection in tomato and it's sorting. The images are acquired by two webcams and processed by the algorithms based on color threshold method. Two major defects are selected for detection in the tomato. These are Blossom End Rot and Cracks. The Calyxes are considered as good and also sorted from defects by the algorithms. The decision sorting has been based on three features extracted by the image processing algorithms. The color features have been used for detecting the Blossom End Rots from good tomatoes and shape factor combined with No. of Green objects have been used for differentiate the calyxes from crack defects. Two methods have been developed for decision sorting, as rule based and neural network approach. A control system has been developed with belt conveyor to carry the tomatoes and cylinder pushrod of solenoid to push the defected tomatoes after decision-making by the algorithms. The overall accuracy of defect detection attained by rule based approach and neural network has been found 84% and 87.5% respectively. Comparisons of the results obtained by the rule based and neural networks have been also presented by this thesis.
