AbstractDiversification is one of the options before managers to improve the performance of the Firms. Previous evidences show that in emerging economies firms are less diversified as compared to developed economies (Lins V. Servaes, 2002). The relationship between diversification and firm performance has been widely studied. Most of the papers have identified that companies experience value loss due to diversification both in the developed and emerging economies. The result suggests that diversified fines trade at a discount as compared to single segment firms. The study paper attempts to find whether the non financial firms listed on SET 50 index are diversified. The research investigates the relationship between degree of diversification and firm performance. The sample size consists of 34 non financial firms. Out of 34 firms, 23 firms were found to be single segment and 1 1 were multi-segment firms. Finn's performance is measured by accounting returns, market returns and excess value approach from 2001 - 2003. The study finds that on average diversified firms perform better than the undiversified firms on the basis of all the measures of performance. However, this association was not found in the sub-sample regression model for the listed firms. Diversification was found to be positively related with size of the firm and ownership concentration. Overall, all the performance measures show negative relationship between diversification and fine performance.
