Abstract | This thesis is targeted to develop a smart system to determine the position of an underwater robot. The system will help the robot exploring the deep-water world to determine its position relative to its surroundings. This system uses ultrasonic proximity sensors to determine the proximity with the surroundings. Local Positioning System (LPS) indicates the position of robot in 3-dimentional spaces, its concept is quiet similar to that of Global Positioning System (GPS). Since the LPS is devised for local purposes, therefore the ultrasonic waves are used for determining time differences in transmission and reception. LPS has one transceiver on the robot and three transceivers, called beacons, on water surface thus it looks like three spheres intersecting at only one position i.e. of underwater robot. MCS-52 microcontroller is programmed to calculate and determine the position of robot at a given time, after pulse signals from all beacons have arrived to the microcontroller. The positioning program is written to use the time differences of transmission and reception as inputs of positioning equations. The position of the underwater robot is displayed on a LCD. |
