AbstractIn this research, an attempt has been made to automate spray-painting process of a toy manufacturing industry. Various conceptual designs have been analyzed before arriving at a most feasible and cost-effective solution. Jn the later part of the study, detection and classification of surface defects of painted car bodies has been identified as a potential research area. Therefore, a vision system is developed for inspection of surface defects of painted toy car bodies. This study also describes an investigation done to determine the feasibility of using neural networks to this specific application to perform defect classification. This study required sample acquisition, image capture, image segmentation, feature extraction and training a neural network. Morphological image processing and connected component labeling is done to extract useful features for classification. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed research by giving classification accuracy of 92% based on the obtained data.
