AbstractThis study aims to estimate the operating speeds on the three-dimensional highway alignments in Thailand in order to achieve the consistency of highway design. The inconsistency highway design leads the driver to use the inappropriate operating speed that may cause road accidents. Existing operating speed models for highway alignment design in Thailand are mainly based on two-dimensional (2D) analysis. This research, therefore, intends to develop operating speed models the three-dimensional (3D) two-lane rural highways in Thailand that cover all types of terrain including mountain terrain, rolling terrain and level terrain. A method to evaluate the consistency of a design is to verify operating speeds changes. In this study, several approaches were undertaken to predict operating speeds for different conditions including horizontal, vertical, and combined curves. The findings from the different approaches were incorporated into a speed-profile model. The model can be used to evaluate the design consistency of the highway. The models will help highway designers to predict operating speed and evaluate design consistency more accurately.
