AbstractHighly increasing of traffic volume becomes a problem at many intersections in Vientiane municipality, consequently safety and delay problems are occurred. Intersection between road No. l and road No.5 is a major intersection that has much escalating of traffic volume for years and it is predictable to have large traffic volumes in the near future due to cargo transportation from Lao-Thai International Friendship Bridge over Mekong River. This research investigated the most appropriate configuration type of highway interchange at this selected intersection in order to increase efficiency of traffic movements at this intersection. In this research, alternatives of highway interchange are designed in term of capacity and geometry, which based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official (ASSHTO 2001) and Highway Capacity Manual 2001; whereas weighting analysis is applied as selection technique among alternatives. In addition, the research also intends to find issues related to interchange application at this intersection as currently interchange has yet to be constructed in Lao PDR. It was found that among the three proposed available interchange types, the trumpet type interchange was recommended as the most suitable type. This evaluation was based on the weighting analysis of the three major aspects of engineering, economic and environmental of the proposed criteria of capacity and geometry of this selected intersection.
