Abstract | An experiment on the co-culture of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus spp) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) was conducted in 27 aquaria containing 60-liter of water at the Ornamental Fish and Aquatic Plants Institute, Department of Fisheries, Bangkok for 33 days to determine whether suckermouth catfish cause any negative physiological effect on goldfish under co-culture condition at different stocking densities and stocking ratios. The experiments were conducted using 3 x 3 factorial design (stocking density i.e. 66, 133 and 200 fish/m3 x stocking ratio i.e. 0:1, 1:3 and 1:1 of suckermouth catfish: goldfish) with three replications. Growth response, survival, plasma cortisol and glucose concentration were used as the indicators of stress response of goldfish. Stocking density, higher stocking ratio (> 1 :3 and the culture period had a significant positive effect on the plasma cortisol concentration. However, stocking density and species ratios had no significant effect on the plasma glucose concentration of the goldfish (P>0.05). The growth and survival rate were significantly reduced in higher stocking densities (P<0.05) but both the density and species ratios densities had relatively less effect on the survival of the goldfish. Observation on the behavior activity showed that number of attack caused by suckermouth catfish to gold fish was significantly higher in the nighttime rather than daytime (P<0.05). A significantly high plasma cortisol level of goldfish was observed in stocking ratio higher that 1 :3. This observation suggested that if the stocking ratio of suckermouth catfish and goldfish is less than 1 :3 in the ornamental aquarium, suckermouth catfish might not have a significant negative physiological stress on goldfish. |
