AbstractThe study focused to explore the existing agroforestry practices and the preferred crop and tree species in the mountainous areas of Vietnam. It also tried to review the incentive policies of Government of Vietnam on forestry and poverty alleviation in upland. Through the exploration, the attempt was made to identify the factors influencing the agroforestry intensification and promotion to recommend for strategy of further agroforestry promotion program. The highlight objective of this research is to analyze the contribution of agroforestry to farm households' income. It affirmed the important role of agroforestry to foster biophysical sustainability and livelihood diversity of farmers. Quan Hoa Food Security Project (QHFP) was funded by WVV since 1999. This project aimed to increase the level of food security and knowledge of slopping cultivation through promoting an ecologically sustainable farming system, among the ethnic minorities in three remote mountainous communes of Quan Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province. This research was conducted in two communes of QHFP site using a survey questionnaire with a total of 58 sampled households as a prime method for data collection. The research was focused on quantitative analysis but qualitative technique was also applied. The findings revealed that the integrating woody perennials with herbaceous or root crops and with livestock in agroforestry produces food, fodder and fuel supplies jointly rather than separately, arresting and reversing soil losses, and improving livelihood security. The income of project households is quite improved through the agroforestry intensification. The research concluded that agroforestry is suitable alternative land use in the mountainous areas where as traditional subsistence systems have not been any more able to meet the demand of people when pressure of land and forestry resources has been increased. The intensification of agroforestry could bring the substantial changes by ensuring environmental conservation, enhancing soil fertility and especially improving farm households' income through the providing of various sources of crops, trees, livestock, NTFP, fish rearing... Certain recommendations were given in this research to improve the agroforestry intensification and strengthen the extension service in mountainous areas. These were focused on improvement of existing agroforestry practices, capital support, extension services and government policies.
