Abstract | Questionnaire and shelf survey were carried out to collect the data on the types, amounts of use and application method for pesticide products used indoor in Pathumthani province, BMR, Thailand. 100 questionnaires were conducted and the results show that the most commonly used pesticide products are aerosol spray can and coil. On average for aerosol spray can one medium bottle was used per three months and for coil, one coil per day. Shelf survey results show that the top 10 ranking of pesticide brands that placed on shelf in different stores are Ars, Baygon, Raid, Chaindrite, Chang, Sheildtox, Hall fat, Aswin, Kayari and Kincho. Relatively, AIT's residences are mainly sprayed with pesticides by a pest control company that has the same active ingredients as the Chaindrite brand, i.e. Bifenthrin. Three sampling sites of residence in AIT, single house, townhouse and dormitory, were chosen to monitor the levels of pesticide both indoor and outdoor by using low volume samplers for 24 hours. Cascade impactor was only used to collect the particulate phase (fine and coarse) in indoor of townhouse for 72 hour sampling. Six synthetic pyrethroid pesticides, fourteen PCBs, and fifteen chlorinated pesticides were analyzed. However, only ten compounds were detected which were Bifenthrin, PCB 18, 28, 31, 44, 52 and 101, a-BHC, Aldrin and Heptachlor epoxide in some samples. Bifenthrin was detected only for single house. No Bifenthrin was detected at townhouse and dormitory, which might be due to the mechanical ventilation at the- latter. For PCBs compounds, the lighter with lower chlorinated species of PCBs such as PCB 18, 28, 31, 44, 52 were found more than the higher chlorinated species (PCB 101). Aldrin and Heptachlor epoxide were also detected, even though these compounds have been banned. The compounds are present in the environment due to long half-life and may be due to long range transportation. Most of the analyzed compounds were detected in both gas and particulate phase, e.g., Bifenthrin was found about 45% in gas and 55% in particulate phase. The cascade sampling (for townhouse) results show that around 50% of PM 10 presents in the fine mode (< 2.1 m) and the POP pesticides and PCBs were found in both size ranges. |
