AbstractAt present, Thailand does not have action plan and appropriate policy for Fecal Sludge (FS) management and lacking of data on FS collection, treatment and disposal. Nevertheless, FS management has become the responsibility of local authorities. The purpose of this study is to develop database on FS collection, treatment and disposal in three main river basins in central plain of Thailand, namely, Thachin, Chaopraya and Bangpakong. In order to obtain the data of FS management practices about 300 municipalities were studied through questionnaires and interview the key stakeholders. The field survey and household questionnaires were conducted in Supan Buri, Nakhon Sriayuttaya and Laemchabang municipalities to acquire for types of toilet facilities rind frequency of FS removal in the municipalities. FS samples were collected and analyzed from 1 l municipalities which represent urban and rural areas. The data were formulated by Geographic Information System (GIS) technique illustrate FS collection, treatment and disposal systems. The main types of toilet facilities in study area are cesspool and septic tank systems. Based on sample analyzed from 11 municipalities, it was found that the average FS quantity is 0.45 L/cap/day. The total FS quantity in Thachin, Chaoprava and Bangpakong river basins are 1,221, 5,265 and 579 m3/day, respectively, having average BOD and TS concentrations of 1,494 and 10,595 mg/l. The TS and BOD loading are 75.913 and 10,704 kg/day respectively. FS characteristics of urban and rural areas arc not significantly different at 0.05 level of confidence. Most municipalities do not provide the FS collection service in their areas, 28 municipalities permit the private company to operate the FS collection. However, 31 municipalities operate the FS collection by themselves. Most municipalities and licensed companies do not have a treatment system (205 municipalities). FS is usually disposed in an abandoned areas or agricultural fields without treatment. However, there are 15 municipalities treat the FS into the treatment system The main type of the FS treatment system is anaerobic digestion system. The main problems of FS management are most municipalities do not have budget for purchasing vacuum truck and coristruction FS treatment system.
