AbstractIn this study, the new model to estimate LAI from NDVI at ground level was developed. The processes consist of various steps. Firstly, the field survey was organized in the selected area, Suphanburi province, Thailand. It was chosen because of its large, homogeneous rice field that can produce two crops per year in irrigated area. This field study purpose is to measure LAI and NDVI at ground level. At the rice field, 12 measurement points were randomly selected, in order to be used for the measurement of LAI and NDVI using LAI meter and spectrometer respectively. The measurements were taken between 10.00 am to 12.00 am every week during two months period of time. The correlation between LAI and NDVI was derived from the data measured from the field survey. It was represented by exponential function with the correlation up to 0.8886. However, this model gives the estimation of LAI from NDVI at ground level only. This is due to the unavailability of remote sensing data. At the present, the equation that is used in connecting the ground measurement data with remote sensing data still rely on the equation from Yang and Su. After, the RS-SWAP-GA method was carried out with the simple actual data within the study area. The results showed that the reasonable parameters (sowing date and cropping intensity) were successfully estimated. This RS-SWAP-GA method gave the accuracy percentage up to 83 %. This validation result concludes that RS-SWAP-GA serves as another valuable contributing method in the determination of correlation parameter of the crop model.
