AbstractThe purpose of the irrigation projects is to provide the water for the farmers or the water users in the irrigation areas. The water users in the irrigation system often desire efficiency and equitable of irrigation water in order to receive high benefits from their cultivation which also results the better quality of their lives. The objective of this study is to carry out a comparative economic and social benefit of the irrigation systems for a large-scale project and a medium-scale project in Thailand. The benefit estimation can be used to assess the management of the irrigation systems. The study area is located in Kalasin province in the northeastern part of Thailand. The Lam Pao O&M project is selected as the large-sca le irrigation system. The Huai Kang irrigation project is selected as the medium-scale irrigation system. The economic benefit is estimated by using the production cost analysis and presented in terms of the value of water. The social benefit is estimated by using the social assessment and presented in terms of the high and low benefit based on the factors used for assessment. The benefit estimation and comparison of two systems are presented. The results of the water value estimated from the production cost analysis and the high and low benefit estimated from the social assessment are obtained and compared between the two systems under the different scale projects. The effects of both large- and medium- scale irrigation systems are considered together with the social benefits regarding the farmers' involvement in the irrigation management. The causes that result the high benefit based on the individual factor assessment can be used as the guideline to improve the irrigation systems. This study can be applied to observe the changed in the management of irrigation system in different periods based on the benefit returns to farmers in order to help improve the irrigation management to result in highest benefit.
