AbstractMobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self configuring network that autonomously establishes connectivity via multihop wireless communication. MANET environment experience high packet loss rates because of node mobility and wireless signal interference. In addition they are highly sensitive to the network load due to broadcast nature of the shared wireless medium. This makes reliable multicasting more challenging. To achieve reliability, reliable multicast connectivity should also be robust enough to cope with network dynamics caused by mobility and node failures. This dissertation report introduces a d-hop distributed clustering algorithm that creates a virtual backbone infrastructure having the efficiency of tree based approach and robustness of mesh based approach in infrastructure-less environment of ad hoc network. We then describe a new reliable multicasting approach that uses the infrastructure provided by the virtual backbone. This new approach uses a NACK based local recovery mechanism without requirement of explicit searching for recovery node. Moreover, it uses an ACK based one hop reliable packet delivery scheme to reduce message overhead. Simulation result demonstrates a potential packet delivery ratio in high mobility conditions
