AbstractModern barter differs from traditional barter primarily in that it uses a form of private label currency for transactions. An intermediary called the trade exchange then manages all trade in order to maximize trade volume, which is equivalent to maximizing long-run cash flow. This thesis addresses the problem of visualizing various aspects of barter trade networks, including cash flow. We develop a novel algorithm to decompose a trade network into a set of cash flow cycles and one to analyze the fragility of a trade network. We apply a number of existing visualization techniques to graphically display the results of these algorithms and to perform other analyses of the networks such as clustering and grouping. The techniques are implemented and evaluated on a set of sample problems
