Abstract | This thesis presents the response behavior of a cable stayed bridge on being acted upon by the wind induced static and dynamic forces. Finite element analysis package XFinas is used for the analysis purpose. Since, the cable stayed and suspension bridges are prone to the aerodynamic instabilities caused by wind, this becomes a prime criterion to be checked during the design. If the wind velocity exceeds the critical velocity for any aerodynamic instability that the bridge can withstand, then the bridge fails due to that phenomenon. Up until now, to calculate wind loading input, some independent small program or Microsoft Excel have been used and input into general purpose program. In order to make easy model for the wind loading analysis, programming of wind loading under both static and dynamic effects have been implemented inside XFinas and validated with available solved numerical problems during this thesis work. For wind load analysis the Rama VIII cable stayed bridge of Bangkok, Thailand has been considered due to availability of required data for validation and comparison of the computer model. A three dimensional bridge model of Rama VIII cable stayed bridge have been developed using XFinas. The bridge model is then analyzed for natural frequency and vibration mode shapes using XFinas. The results obtained are compared with the same obtained during field testing. The results obtained from the numerical model of the bridge show encouraging similarity with that of field testing. After implementation of programming of wind loading under both static and dynamic effects into XFinas, linear static and linear dynamic analysis of the Rama VIII bridge model have been investigated using the newly developed wind loading features in XFinas. This analysis yields results which show the response of the bridge under both static and dynamic effects of wind. Due to unavailability of field data in this regard these outputs could not be checked for authenticity. However the response curves obtained show partial resemblance with the theoretical curves for response of a structure under aerodynamic forces. |
