AbstractMobile IPv6 has been designed to manage Mobile Nodes movements between wireless IPv6 networks. One of the most important considerations for Mobile IPv6 is handover management. When a Mobile Node is handed over from one point of attachment to another, it is desired that the transition be fast and smooth, with minimum packet loss. Packet delivery might get slow when different schemes are used to prevent loss of packets, such as buffering to temporarily store packets when a Mobile Node has left previous point but has not attached the new point yet. On the other hand, with fast handovers to reduce the latency involved with handover, there is a possibility of packet loss. Seamless handovers are such that they incur minimum packet loss and delay. In this thesis work, effort has been made to study such schemes and propose a seamless handover scheme which has optimized fast handover over hierarchical structure with buffering to reduce the packet loss. Buffering is performed at the New Access Router while the Mobile Node is handing over from the Previous Access Router to the New Access Router and does not have link connectivity yet with the New Access Router.
