Abstract | In this study, we consider the lightpath setup process in WDM networks with sparse wavelength conversion. We propose a novel probe packet format for the destination initiated reservation (DIR) signalling scheme to be used with any routing function to collect route status information. In addition, we propose a new wavelength assignment algorithm that minimizes the number of wavelength conversion used along the route by iteratively searching for the longest wavelength-continuous segment. We also propose a wavelength assignment algorithm based on the intermediatenode initiated reservation (IIR) to minimize the number of wavelength conversion and to reduce the blocking probability caused by outdated information. Our proposed wavelength assignment algorithm is superior to all previously proposed algorithms in two ways: First, the number of wavelength conversions in the lightpath is always minimum; Second, the computational complexity of proposed algorithm is always less than those of previously proposed ones. Simulation results show that proposed algorithms perform better in terms of blocking probabilities than First Fit and HLR algorithms and the blocking probability of the second proposed algorithm is always less or equal than that of the first one. We conclude that two proposed algorithms make the usage of wavelength converter in an optical network more efficient and less complex. |
