Abstract | There is a long-te1m trend of shifting values in Western society and its corresponding change in the expectations we have of corporations today. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - the idea that companies have to give back to society has blossomed over last decade and has become a common corporate policy for most firms. Nevertheless, there is growing doubt among the original instigators whether executive's efforts are really genuine or whether they are only using CSR as a "cosmetic face lifting" to pay tribute to virtue in a capitalist society. While this is a question of concern the pivotal element in this issue is whether it is more efficient for companies to focus mainly on profit maximization or whether they should take social and envirorunental aspects into account as well. In this context it will be necessary to get insight into this issue by exploring the very roots of CSR history, taking a look at the different forms of CSR activity in practice and getting insight into a broad range of different points of view varying from CSR critical businesses to advocates in the form of institutions, networks and academic representatives. In the end, the aim of this study is to work out different approaches to CSR and finally compare them among each other in order to find the best and most efficient solution for all parties involved. In other words, the quintessence of this study is whether this best solution will suggest companies to adopt CSR as a profitable corporate policy, and if yes in what f01m, or whether they should simply leave it aside and focus on their core competence of pure profit making. |
