AbstractMost of the multi-story buildings in Bangkok are supported by pile foundations since the underlying soils possess low bearing capacity. It has been a common practice in the design to assume that the structure is firmly fixed on the ground. Nevertheless, the ambient vibration test conducted with many existing buildings throughout Bangkok revealed that there are the appreciable magnitudes of lateral displacements at the base of these buildings. This discovery suggested that the fixed-base assumption may not be valid for the multistory buildings in Bangkok. The flexibility of foundation affects the dynamic characteristics of the buildings and may cause adverse effects on seismic responses as reported in literature. This study proposes the analytical dynamic model to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the multi-story buildings in Bangkok. This model is basically an equivalent continuum model composed of a flexure beam and a shear beam, and a base spring is put to simulate the flexible pile foundations. Closed-form solutions for natural frequencies, vibration mode shapes as well as the elastic response analysis formulation are presented. The parametric study of the influencing parameter of the model is also performed. The model is then calibrated and validated with the measured data available. Three parameters are required to define the _model, namely, the fundamental period in fixed-base condition, the parameter a and X . The model is capable to reproduce the average fundamental natural periods and base movements, and it reasonably well predicts the other dynamic properties of the actual buildings in Bangkok. The fully defined model is ready to use as a tool for designing multi-story buildings that locate in Bangkok
