AbstractSource modeling has greater impact on the performance of all types of network. With advancement in technology, the user's terminal is becoming capable to operate more than one service, illustrating multimode behavior in multiservice environment. In this thesis, the source is modeled incorporating multimode behavior. The performance of multiservice network in presence of multimode source is studied through analytical and simulation method. For analytical part, two dimensional Markov model for finite source is considered with Poisson arrival process and exponential service time whereas in case of simulation, in addition to exponential service time distribution, constant, uniform and Pareto distributions are considered. The QoS experienced by single mode source (e.g., terminal that is capable to operate voice service only) as well as multimode source (e.g., fully capable multimode terminal) are discussed. The influence of penetration of multimode source on network performance is also studied. The multimode source is implemented in GSM/GPRS network considering real time services only (e.g., voice and video) and real time and best effort type service (e.g., voice and GPRS) and the network performance is studied through simulation. The simulation results show that presence of three state multimode source with one transition between two active states improves the network performance whereas presence of four state multimode source with two transition among three active states degrades; three state multimode source without transition remains neutral. For single mode source (e.g., voice only source), presence of three state multimode source with one transition between two active state is beneficial and presence of four state multimode source with two transition among three active states is critical in terms of QoS experienced. As the penetration of multimode source increases from 0 to 100 percent, the performance of network with three state multimode source without transition degrades; with three state multimode source with one transition between two active states improves and no effect with four state multimode source with two transition among three active states source. Although user having highly capable terminal will have high expectation on the QoS experienced in different modes, it is not getting even equal QoS as less capable terminal (e.g. voice only source). Therefore, there should be provision to give certain priority to those users maintaining certain level of QoS for voice only users
