AbstractUltra-Wideband (UWB) communication system and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system are two promising techniques for providing higher data rate with low cost and relatively low power consumption. These systems provide efficient spectrum usage, high capacity and robustness against multipath fading. In this thesis, performance of UWB system with Space Time Coding (STC) taking different modulation schemes like Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) scheme, Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) scheme and Pulse Position Amplitude Modulation (PPAM) scheme are investigated over IEEE 802.15.3a UWB channel. To evaluate the UWB-MIMO system performance accurately, the channel model IEEE 802.15.3a UWB channel, already accepted as realistic channel model for UWB system is considered for evaluation of the STC-UWB system. Analog space time coding and different multiple access schemes like Time Hopping (TH) and Direct Sequence (DS) techniques are considered. The complete system is analyzed for different data rates, different channel conditions, different number of selective rake receiver arms and different number of receive antennas. The performance of the system is examined in presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Multi-user Interference (MUI). Based on simulation results the performance of the system with different modulation schemes is compared. Results show higher number of rake arms has no significant influence on Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of TH-PPAM and TH-PPM scheme. STC-UWB system with two receive antenna showed a significant improvement in system performance in comparison to system with one receive antenna though both the cases are found to outperform conventional UWB system. TH-PPAM scheme is found to perform better than TH-PPM in both single and multiple user case. It performs same as TH-PAM in case of Non Line of Sight (NLOS) but worse compared to TH-PAM in Line of Sight (LOS) condition. Though, TH-PAM outperforms all the schemes in the single user case however in case of system with Multiple User Interferences (MUI), DS-PAM outperforms all the other schemes. In case of different channel conditions, the system with TH-PAM and TH-PPM gives better performance in LOS condition compared to NLOS. The system with TH-PPAM performs similar in case of LOS and NLOS for low signal to noise ratio (SNR) whereas gives better performance in NLOS condition for high SNR
