Abstract | Traffic accident is one of the major health problems in the world. Among different types of vehicles, motorcycles are the main mode in contributing to road accidents in many developing countries. Vietnam in general or Hanoi in particular is also one of them where 90 percent of vehicle fleets are motorcycles. Since, motorcycle is a popular means of transportation in Hanoi city with over 1.5 million motorcycles. The existence of motorcycle in transport system with high the rising trend has some negative and positive effects in peoples life. It is easy to own motorcycle at cheap price and travel by motorcycle with short, medium distance to anywhere. Besides, motorcycles are increasing with high rate. However, the infrastructure could not meet the demand of traffic flows which directly influence the motorcycle riders behavior to a large extent. Therefore, motorcycle accidents occur everywhere with a rising trend with time. This research attempted to analyze the motorcycle accidents in Hanoi. Motorcycle user characteristics as well as their behavior were also examined through questionnaire survey. Field observations were also conducted along two selected routes during the different time periods to identify the helmet usage rate. One route represented the compulsory usage of helmet case while another route did not enforce motorcyclists to wear helmet. In addition, data were also collected from the Hanoi Transport Police Office and the Viet Duc Hospital to examine the contributing factors to motorcycle accidents in Hanoi. It was known that among all motorcyclists, males (60.6%) dominated their females (39.4%) counterpart and the younger group of 21-30 years old was found to the highest user group represented about 58.7% of all respondents. Motorcycles are popular among all commuters especially government officers and students. Most of riders would wear helmet only the required street and the main reason for wearing is because of afraid of policemen. Results obtained from the police and hospital data indicated that motorcycle is the most accident prone mode of travel in Hanoi. The main reason contributed to high motorcycle accident rate is speeding and lack of attention. On the other hand, results obtained from the field observation revealed that motorcyclists tended to wear helmet along the compulsory route than the route which did not impose any regulation. However, their usage rates are fading away rapidly during the night time. |
