AbstractMyanmar is agricultural based country. Seventy percent of people are living in the rural area and engaging in agriculture. In 1988 the government practices the market economy and the farmers are growing the export crops because the export crops can get high price. So they want to get more and they use the pesticides. On the other hand the farmers worry to loose the crops and then use the pesticides. The problem is lack of information and inadequate regulatory capacity makes it near to impossible to use the chemicals safely. This research paper has been designed to find out "Gender perception on pesticides and health" at the target area in the Pwint Phyu Township in central Myanmar, where intensive agriculture is practiced by growing many diversified crops mainly rice and pulses. This research finds out how the farmers perceive, how much they know about the pesticides and its health effect. Who are facing with the pesticides poisoning? Can women get the pesticide poisonings? How many farmers know about the IPM? Why they have these kinds of perception? More over, the research finds out the difference perceptions between women and men regarding to the pesticides and health effect. The research reveals the different roles and responsibilities of women and men roles, the exposure of pesticides also. More over the research helps make women's part in agriculture visible. It reminds policy makers and researchers of the importance of documenting the experiences of both women and men. It also mentions us that the pesticides can make poisoning women and men both even though mostly women do not spray the pesticides. I tried to find out the major activities of their livelihood, the pesticides they use, the health problems which they face. This research will be valuable to government, development agencies and other institution drawing up development initiatives which must take account of the realities of people's daily life. So this research will help the development policies they promote are effective.
