Abstract | The close collaboration of Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers and Original Brand Manufacturing (OBM) companies made computer, communication, and consumer electronic products from product concept to delivery a reality. The EMS providers develop their competitiveness in terms of cost reduction, global logistics, quality stability, on-time delivery, and joint design; whereas, the OBM companies devote to create product inception, brand value, marketing strategies, and sales channels. The collaboration between EMS providers and OBM companies form a win-win strategy to educate, explore and capture the markets. This research attempts to find out the role of information technology in light to the competitiveness of EMS providers through questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. The survey outcome was aimed in arriving insights on IT adoption categories in EMS firms, IT need for their business activities, and IT impact on competitiveness in the electronics manufacturing services provider. The main findings from the questionnaire survey and in-depth interview are as below: First, disperse location of departments increase information technology utilization frequency and categories. Second, information technologies' communication function is more attractive than decision-making function to middle management level. Third, the core competitiveness from information technologies in the benchmarked EMS firm can be grouped into cost advantage and service differentiation. |
