Abstract | Prior to 1999, Indian insurance sector was under the monopoly of the state owned enterprises as it was closed for the private players. But in 1999, the sector had experienced a reform when Indian government opens doors for the private companies. That was the turning point for the industry as for the first time after 195,6; the market has come out of the monopoly and face the competition. Since 1999, 13 in life insurance and 9 private companies have jumped into the market to give the direct competition to the state owned enterprises Life Insurance Corporation and General Insurance Corporation respectively. Due to the competition the state owned enterprises have lost big ground in the industry and have lost almost 20% of the market share since 2000. The study attempts to identify the key issues that the market is facing at present and that are hindering the further growth of the market. The other dimension of this study would analyze the future challenges of the further development of the industry. The major conclusion of the study is that Indian insurance market has a huge potential to grow in the future and a lot of international insurance companies are eager to invest provided IRDA and Indian government should change some of the regulations to make it more investors friendly |
