Abstract | Being a non-WTO member, Vietnam is currently the only major exporter of' textile and garment products continuing to be subject to quota harriers. Fortunately, Vietnam has completed bilateral negotiations with over 40 WTO members and hopefully to join the WTO before November 2006, when Hanoi hosts the APEC summit. Many recent researches have proved that Vietnamese textile and garment industry will benefit from phasing out of quota after WTO accession. However, the industry will also face fiercer competition, especially China's dominance in global textile and garment market, and lose subsidies form the government. The research analyzes prospects and challenges for Vietnamese textile and garment industry after WTO accession in order to propose a development strategy for the industry to cope with the new situation. Based on the current competitive advantage of the industry, the Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises should focus on vertical expansion, downstream investment, domestic market and building local brands. Besides, the development strategy has been set up with four major stages and specific resources or capabilities required for each stage including product expertise, process technology, managerial capabilities and state of the art technologies |
