Abstract | According to the 2006 report on Global Retail Development Index of A.T. Kearney, the U.S.based consultancy group, Vietnam rose five places this year to number 3 on the Index. Vietnam has consistently performed well over the past five years and has become one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. It has advanced to third in the world as the most attractive market for global goods distributors. In Vietnam, there are traditional channels like markets, stores, retail outlets etc. which account for most of the retail network of distribution. Together with the growth of the retail industry in Vietnam, a new modern store-retailer, supermarket, which first appeared in Vietnam in early 1990s, has changed the buying behaviors of the Vietnamese, diversified the channels of retail industry, improved the quality of the distribution network, and gradually played an important role in making buying decision of the consumers. This research study is to analyze the development trend of the modern store-retailers in Vietnam, their characteristics compared with other channel of retail distribution like markets, retail stores, vendors etc., and its opportunities to grow in the future; above all, to understand what to be suggested in order to improve the growing of this channel |
