Abstract | Today, Information Technology (IT) is the major driving force of the post-industrial society. Phenomenal growth in IT has made the job of the IT project managers of enterprises extremely complex. In government organizations, this is equally apparent. Quite often there is a widespread dissatisfaction about the performance of Information System (IS) projects and while analyzing the causes for this failure, it was recognized that technology is more often a secondary issue behind management. This research study attempts to find out the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for IT projects in the public sector. A conceptual framework was developed based on the previous research studies on CSFs for IT-related projects. Then, quantitative technique which is survey was conducted. Data on information were collected from IT project managers in the selected public organization in the energy sector of Thailand to investigate the factors influencing project success, and further identify a list of ranked CSFs and success criteria for IT projects as well as construct the applicable CSFs framework. The results are very subjective in nature but represent the managers' view point. The results reveal that a comprehensive list of CSFs for IT projects selected from literature was considered the significance by the case study, although there are slight differences in the rankings of CSFs from previous studies. This may because of the different characteristics of organization or the nature of project. However, this list of CSFs for IT projects is applicable in the public sector context especially in Thailand. As a result, all of these CSFs should be considered for any IT development projects within the public sector. These conclusions are significant to the management of IT in governments at various levels to enhance the success of IT project |
