Abstract | The world has been changing rapidly and getting closer under the phenomenon of globalization. Global integrations of economies are occurred with increasing interdependence between economic regions. These globalization trends lead to form a regional cooperation and integration, namely regionalism. Recently, regionalism comes up with bilateral and regional trade negotiations, as a formation of Free Trade Agreement, which has continued to expand both in number and in scope. Asian region including Korea did not show much interest in PTA at first, but now it became a crucial means in order to secure its foreign market and reinforce its national competitiveness. Korea has set up a PTA strategy to take a bunch of PTA talks simultaneously with major trading partners. Meantime, Korea concluded FTAs with Chile, EFTA and Singapore, but Korea-ASEAN PTA is assessed the full-scale negotiations with a large economic bloc. Korea and ASEAN are requested to cooperate effectively and efficiently through current FTA negotiations in order to gain reciprocal economic benefits and structure a large regional trading bloc. The conclusion of negotiations on trade in goods provided another momentum to the establishment of East Asian FTA. Virtually, Korea-ASEAN FTAs has a significant head start to stepping toward EAFTA in the long-term vision. |
