AbstractA significant earthquake threat exists for the city of Ahmedabad. A recurrence of earthquake as in 2001 January may prove more fatal in the coming years. This looks into the objective of identifying the need for a usable tool for vulnerability assessment for earthquake mitigation and preparedness planning for sustainable urban development. The study consists of three principal parts. The first part identifies the earthquake vulnerability in the region and the development of the earthquake scenario for Ahmedabad. It also looks at the various vulnerability assessment tools available and their usage. The second part identifies the potential consequences of the scenario event on the communities along with the damage that may be caused to the infrastructure facilities. The scenario is developed by using a damage estimation tool called RADIUS which gives an opportunity to visualize an earthquake and its effects. The scenario serves the purpose to facilitate earthquake preparedness. It has been demonstrated at several places world wide that one can reduce loss of life, injuries, damage, and economic disruption by preparedness. The third part covers seismic risk mitigation measures that can be taken to lessen the impact of the earthquake. This study suggests that vulnerability assessment for all earthquake prone cities is a must and user friendly tools like RADIUS could be used to carry out mitigation planning.
