Abstract | Alain Peyrefitte, a famous French author wrote a best seller in 1973 named "When china wakes up, the world shakes". The title is quoting Napoleon who once said: "Let China Sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world". The book forecasts the consequences for France and the world of a bound-to-be economic development of the biggest country in the world. After more than 20 years with an average growth rate at 10%, it is time to look deeper into the economic situation of China and the bilateral relations with France. Has France taken full advantage of the potentialities of China? In which sector is the French position strong or weak? Given the forecasts of the Chinese economy, in which sector can French companies improve their position? Looking at the current position of France in China, we can see on the one hand that it is relatively weak, which is due to the fact that the demand of china does not really converge with the French international specialization in International trade and, on the other hand that it is dominated by big French companies, which means that a strong pedagogical effort has to be done to increase the number of SMEs in China. China is full of opportunities for French companies in the mid to long term. The development of china should improve the political and judicial stability as well as the standard of living of the Chinese population opening new perspectives and sectors in which France is highly competitive. |
