AbstractAs in other developing countries, urbanization and development in Lao PDR is leading to rapid environmental degradation. The consequences are startling. Each year, many children die from diarrhoea) diseases, making it the second most serious killer. Therefore, the need to change children's sanitation behavior and practice by improving their awareness on sanitation is of paramount importance. This study focuses on school sanitation as one of the most important areas that need attention. It is considered as vital because school sanitation will have spread effect to improve the behaviors and practices students at homes and thereby in their communities. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to explore the strategic interventions that are needed to improve the overall sanitary condition of schools and thereby making positive externalities towards their neighborhoods. Based on a questionnaire surveys involving students and teachers the study finds that overall impression about the existing sanitary infrastructure and facilities in schools among the two groups are contrastingly different. This is due to the different status of facilities that the two groups use. The study also finds that although the students have fairly good knowledge on sanitation, they do not have proper facilities or training to use that knowledge. Lack of sufficient sanitary infrastructure, inadequate operation and maintenance, lack of suitable policies, poor teaching material and limitation of specialized teachers are seen as major drawbacks for improve sanitary condition in schools. The study recommends adapting a participatory approach to operate and maintain school sanitary facilities involving the parents' association.
