Abstract | The escalation of natural and man made disasters around the world has negatively impacted the Tourism Industry. The implementation of disaster management practices hence has become critical to Hotel businesses which are highly susceptible to the external environment. The objective of the study was to find out the level of disaster preparedness in the Phuket hotel sector along with what are the key initiatives taken during the aftermath of the Tsunami. The research paper analyzed the existing management practices and changes in management perception in comparison with the pre-Tsunami environment. The results have shown that the management of the hotels in Phuket has a greater awareness of Disasters and have taken initiatives to better manage their business during a crisis. However, the key findings also indicated that the focus of the disaster management initiatives in Phuket hotel sector was more on disaster recovery rather than prevention |
