AbstractCSR has become an integral part of business operations of companies operating in a global platform. Corporations have moved away from just protecting their shareholders rights to protecting the rights of various stakeholders and draw on the community where they draw all their resources .CSR encompasses the growth of a corporation through honor for ethical reporting, respect for stakeholders and the environment. In present day it is called triple bottom line of good governance. Today the debate is not about whether the corporates need to take on social responsibility, but how is it to be discharged, measured, audited and continuously improved upon is the issue. The fundamental idea embedded in CSR is that corporations can no longer act as isolated economic entities in detachment from broader issues of society. Demands have been made that CSR should be made mandatory and should include specific targets that should be measured. They are supposed to continuously improve their triple bottom line. If this happens it is a big step towards corporates assuming greater responsibility for their policies and practices. What is expected of corporates is not only to brag about their positive roles in media releases but also report what has gone wrong and how do we undo the damage. The paper examines these issues in the context of the Tata Group in India
