Tourism industry in Myanmar : an analysis of barriers and development options

AbstractIn many countries, tourism industry is one of the fast growing industries and it is important source of country income, wealth and employment creation. For our country Myanmar also, Tourism sector is second largest sector which contributes Foreign Exchange Currency to country GDP after Oil and Gas Sector. Therefore, the government is keeping on trying to develop tourism sector and encourage local companies to promote interesting tour products and participate in international tourism promotion program, however, country tourism development is still lagging behind its potential growth. The strong point of Myanmar tourism is that it possesses natural resources, climate, culture, history, and ethnicity that exert a pull on visitors making it a fascinating tourism destination. However, Myanmar has yet to make a significant impact in this industry that since the industry is underdeveloped as a result of many structural constraints. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify some of the generic problems that restrict effective development of tourism sector in Myanmar. This paper reports the outcomes of a series of in-depth interviews with tourists and tour operators; and the interviews were focused on the barriers encountered by tourists during their visit and by tour operators in operating their business. The responses from international tourists and tour operators were analyzed and revealed a number of generic problems which tourists faced during their visit and which companies faced in operating their business. Identification of the barriers and obstacles encountered by tourists and tour operators in accelerating effective development lead to the discussion of possible solutions to overcome these obstacles, and as such, the secondary focus of this paper is to recommend the development tools to overcome these barriers.
