AbstractIn this research, we study the effect of implementing security in VoIP networks. The different performance parameters of VoIP Network are bandwidth utilization, delay and dropped packets. These are evaluated in presence of internet traffic injected to typical network and QoS supported specific network with deployment of MPLS explicit routing and DIFFSERV differentiated service. IPsec is implemented to the resultant networks and the above performance parameters are evaluated. Then the performance of typical network with security is compared to that of the specific network with security. The whole scenario is simulated in the network simulator NS2. MPLS and DiffServ are considered as a solution for provisioning of end-to-end QoS. MPLS can support voice better since its connection-oriented feature and allows to forward packets along predefined paths. Meanwhile, DiffServ offers QoS classes, and supports priorities of traffic aggregates; packets are classified & marked at network ingress routers and treated according to their service class. Security is another important vulnerable feature of VoIP network. Authentication and key Agreement process and encryption protocol is essential to prevent regular security threats like authentication, voice and data integrity, denial of service attacks. The results from the different simulation scenarios is compared together, and we see that, the delay variation or jitter for VoIP traffic in the case of MPLS and DiffServ Environment with security is better than non MPLS and DIFFSERV Environment with security. The VoIP bandwidth utilization and packet loss ratio in former case is deteriorating than the latter one. Thus MPLS's bandwidth guarantee and DIFFSERV's differentiated queue service treatment along with security makes VoIP performance much better and reliable
