AbstractElectricity is a key ingredient for the socio-economic development of the country. Adequate and reliable supply of electricity is an important pre-requisite for attracting both domestic and foreign investment. But frequent power failure has become a common picture both to commercial as well as domestic arena. The Government has given top priority to development of the sector considering its importance in overall development of the country. This study depicts an overview of current power generation sector. The current 158 KWh per capita consumption of electricity in Bangladesh is one of the lowest in the world and only 38% population has the access to electricity. Providing electricity to all by 2020 creates a huge opportunity for private investment in the country. The government of Bangladesh is promoting private investment in power generation by providing quite a large number of fiscal incentives and other incentives for investors through Private Power Generation Policy adopted in 1996. The study analyzes the investment opportunities through Independent Power Producers and Small Power Producers. Given the present power crisis in the country, the study figures out the challenges embedded in the system to meet the huge task and recommendations to improve the overall scenario of power generation sector in Bangladesh.
